Pushup goal 2.0
Last year, around mid-year, I made a challenge to see how many pushups I could do in a day. It started out okay, and then by the end of the year I got really good with them. The only problem was my goal didn't focus on consistency. I would go weeks sometimes a whole month without working them and naturally when I tried again I wasn't as good. That's what I like about this year's challenge - it will take what I challenged myself from last year but add the goal of consistency to it. I know I can do the number of pushups, I just can't let myself ignore doing them regularly.
Also for those of you who are using pushups in your goal, check this guy out - http://www.amazon.com/Death-Taxes-Push-ups-Ted-Skup/dp/0615161723#
Ted Skup has books, articles, and of course PRN press releases about the awesome power of the pushup.

Take it slow and don't feel bad about it.
I had a kid cut out of me in December...of 2013. Doing pushups and other "fitness" type things haven't worked so well in the last year. So, on day 1, I had rubbery arms but adrenaline and heavy breathing pushed me through 28 man-style pushups.
By day 4, I added situps. Going big and gettin' it done.

Pushup Variants
Do we need 15 variations of pushups? Doubtful. But, there are still 362.5 days to desire a little change of pace, so perhaps it's good to keep some of these in mind: The Top 15 Pushup Variations
Drynuary
The arrival of the Fitness Challenge was perfect timing for me. I'm planning on running a half-marathon with Alberto later this year, so getting myself in shape is pretty much mandatory. I'll probably be running mostly, but I'll still try and do my fair share of push ups. I can't wait to compare pecs at our year-end Fitness Challenge party. (There's going to be a party, right?)
Anyway, another challenge I am planning for myself is taking part in Drynuary. In case you've not heard of that awful word, it basically means no drinking during the month of January (not counting New Year's Day, because you were probably drinking at 12:01, so you might as well have a drink when you wake up).
I thought about doing this last year when I read this article, but we had a three month old baby who didn't really like to sleep, so the wife and I found a lot of solace at the bottom of a wine bottle when she did sleep (okay, the bottom of a box of wine).
So I'm on day 2 of Drynuary and OH MY GOD I NEED A DRINK. No, wait. It's actually OK, so far. This is going to be easy. I mean, it won't be easy at all. There are many reasons to drink -- football playoffs, I have two sisters who have birthdays this month, a new season of Justified, it's cold outside, there will be several Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. My point being, I find lots of excuses to drink. Which doesn't really help when it comes to the getting in shape motivation.
I'll let you know how it goes. Feel free to join me. Or feel free to taunt me with your delicious beers, wines and fine liquors.
Oh, and best of all is that February 1 is Super Bowl Sunday. What better way to end 30 days of clean living than with the most disgusting fried food booze-filled day of the year? Then the next day is Groundhog Day, which I always stay up all night and drink. Then it's February 3, and that's as good a day as any to drink a lot.
I reserve the right to end this challenge for a good reason, such as winning a trip to Napa or going through severe alcohol withdrawal.

Be Like Zuckerberg
Apparently Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is into yearly challenges just like us. I guess this is "widely known" but I just learned about it today. Please excuse my ignorance. Past challenges for him have included:
Anyway, in 2015 he's doing a book challenge -- reading a new book every other week. Sounds pretty ambitious but he is encouraging others to join too. So if you like to read or would like to try to get yourself reading more, maybe joining in his book club would be a good add-on to our Fitness Challenge. You can read the details here if you so desire: https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10101828640656261
- Learning to speak Mandarin
- Meeting one new person who doesn't work at Facebook every day
- Writing a thank you note each day to someone who made the world better
- Being a vegetarian (or only eating meat if I killed the animal myself)
- Wearing a tie every day

Motivational Tunes
I've been doing pushups as my challenge -- 28 a day for 365 days. So far, so good. Two days in and I am still on target.
My pushups don't really take long enough to require much motivation, but I saw this posted today and figured I would share it just in case somebody else was interested in freshening up their motivational music (in a HuffPost sort of way): 15 Workout Songs That'll Make You Stick To Your Fitness Resolutions

Another Challenge Begins
In the past there was 2008's Bacon Challenge, 2010's Mile Challenge and 2011's Apple Challenge.
After a lengthy hiatus, the mysterious and elusive Challenge Committee has reconvened and agreed upon a 2015 Challenge -- The Fitness Challenge.
The original proposal was 10,000 pushups over the course of the year -- 28 pushups a day (which actually works out to 10,220 in a year). Then, after some debate, there was talk of mixing it up and doing ab stuff or a 7 min. full body workout or otherwise. Being a fairly liberal Committee that's where thing wound up.
As in years past, it's a challenge, not a contest so really you can make this what you want. Do something for yourself. That said, if a little friendly competition emerges as we go along, that's fine too.
Here are suggested options for the Fitness Challenge, but as previously mentioned, it can be anything you conjure up. Just make it a challenge of the fitness variety:
So we've begun. If you happen to be interested in this Challenge contact us and we'll see about getting you a username/password on the site where we're tracking our progress. Also, if you are participating and you'd like to blog some about fitness, or your journey on this Challenge we could arrange for that as well (maybe try to keep it PG-13 or less).
Alright, let's go!
